Dogs in the Office: Is It Really a Good Idea?

Posted on 06/20/2025

More and more companies are adopting pet-friendly policies that allow employees to bring their dogs to work. Often, having dogs around improves the office atmosphere and serves as a great incentive to retain talent. However, there are important rules to follow, such as restricting dogs from certain areas and respecting colleagues who may have allergies or phobias.

Some dogs truly benefit from accompanying their owners to the office—especially those who get anxious when left alone or those that are naturally sociable.

A Growing Trend

Daniel Mesa’s mornings involve preparing both himself and his dog, Rayo, for their daily trip to the office. Daniel works in content strategy at an advertising agency in central Madrid, and bringing Rayo, a four-year-old dog, to work has become a normal routine. This practice is increasingly common, especially in creative fields like marketing and advertising, where pet-friendly policies are more widespread.

Studies suggest that the presence of animals at work can enhance the workplace environment, improve employee well-being, and help retain talent. Daniel explains, “When you’re with your dog and see them calm, you feel more relaxed yourself. You’re less rushed, and if you need to stay late or handle something extra, you don’t feel pressured.” In cities like Madrid, where commutes and lunch breaks often stretch the workday beyond eight hours, having a dog at the office helps ease the stress of leaving a pet alone for long periods.

Making It Work: Rules and Respect

Companies that allow dogs at work generally implement basic rules: dogs must be on a leash, restricted from certain areas like restrooms and kitchens, and their owners must take responsibility for any incidents. Respect for coworkers who have allergies or fear of dogs is also crucial.

Víctor López, CEO of the comparison website Rastreator, explains that their dog-friendly policy started naturally, given their brand mascot is a dog. “We’ve never had any incidents, and we’re very happy with the arrangement.” Their internal system lets employees report allergies or sensitivities to dogs to ensure a comfortable environment for everyone.

At Redbility, a strategic design consultancy where a chihuahua named Chincheta is considered part of the team, new employees are informed about the pet policy during onboarding, so any concerns can be addressed early. Mario Sánchez, their general manager, calls the policy “very positive.”

Challenges to Consider

However, not everyone feels comfortable with dogs in the workplace. Mario López, a creative professional with a fear of dogs, says that although his coworkers are understanding, he sometimes feels awkward. “You feel like your fear inconveniences others who want to be near their pets.”

Distraction is another concern. Ainhoa Salvador, an administrative employee with two cats, admits she finds it hard to focus when dogs are playing nearby. While she appreciates the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere dogs bring, barking or restless pets can interrupt concentration.

Is It Good for the Dogs?

Dog behavior expert Víctor Padilla advises asking three key questions before bringing a dog to any activity: Will the dog enjoy the environment? Do you have the time and energy to support your dog if they get nervous? Will this place be better for the dog than being at home? If the answer to any is “no,” it’s worth reconsidering.

Some dogs thrive with socialization and hate being left alone. Others might find new environments stressful, especially if they fear people or get overstimulated by crowds. Since the owner is working and cannot constantly monitor the dog, this could make the experience even more stressful for the animal.
